On a recent Tuesday evening, two teenage boys approached their pastor, Camilo Perez, before Bible study. They wanted his take on a debate that had been gnawing at them. Their friends from a local public high school had been talking about discrimination against Latinos. Did the pastor agree? As he ministers to a growing flock of 250 families in the dusty suburbs of Las Vegas, Mr. Perez has transformed from a leader who rarely acknowledged politics to an eager foot soldier in the cultural and political battles in his adopted country.

But on Monday, his diminished reality as a criminal defendant will become clear in humbling fashion during opening statements in his first criminal trial. The process, known as a Sandoval hearing, offered the ex-president a glimpse of personal and unflattering revelations that the trial could dredge up. The political case against the prosecutions was laid out by South Dakota Gov. But Noem rehearsed a political argument that Trump and his associates will be seeking to land as the trial goes ahead. But the deeply consequential political and personal stakes for the former president will become even clearer when the first trial begins for real on Monday.

CNN —Are you looking for a gold-colored pair of high-top sneakers that will show your devotion to former President Donald Trump? These latest Trump offerings may not seem destined to have more success than Trump’s failed business ventures, such as his Trump Vodka and Trump Steaks. In the fourth quarter of 2023, Trump’s presidential campaign raised a paltry $19 million — down significantly from the $25 million the campaign raised in the third quarter of 2023. (By contrast, President Joe Biden’s campaign raised $33 million in the fourth quarter of 2023.) Even among all Americans, Trump seems to be doing better. Instead of leading many voters to distrust Trump, the legal cases are leading voters to distrust the legal system. It’s important for the public to feel that the Trump prosecutions are legitimate. For many Americans, all of these distortions validate their sense that the Trump prosecutions are partisan. As they erode public trust, public officials solidify Trump’s support.

Scores of people turned out Tuesday to testify well into the night on bills being considered by Nebraska lawmakers that target diversity initiatives and higher education programs, mirroring proposals by Republicans across the country. The bills before the state Legislature’s Education Committee included one that would ban diversity, equity and inclusion — known as DEI — programs and offices at state colleges and universities. Similar bills have been introduced in Republican-led legislatures across the country as the 2024 election year heats up. Already this year, Republican lawmakers have proposed about 50 bills in 20 states that would restrict DEI initiatives or require their public disclosure. Among them were several young people of color who grew up in the state or Nebraska college students who told lawmakers of the discrimination they've faced.

“The thing you’ve got to do primarily is set rules and enforce them,” said John S. Martin Jr., a former U.S. District Court judge in Manhattan. After his two recent confrontations with the judges, Mr. Trump held news conferences before cheering supporters in the lobby of his building at 40 Wall Street. Ms. Carroll’s defamation trial is being heard by a nine-person jury in Federal District Court, with Judge Kaplan overseeing the proceedings. CNN —As fighting continues between Israel and Hamas, many may wonder why this war — and, more broadly, the decades-long Israeli–Palestinian conflict — is so intractable. A feature of sacred values is that they cannot be traded-off with profane values like material incentives to compromise. When each side was offered foreign aid to incentivize the deal, it produced a backfire effect among those who held sacred values. When a symbolic concession was offered, those holding sacred values were less angered and disgusted by the deal, and support for violent opposition plummeted. Carrot-and-stick policies, such as the promise of foreign aid coupled with the threat of sanctions, backfire when presented to those holding sacred values.

How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

Each and every day, journalists covering the Middle East conflict are faced with thorny challenges, many of which they must grapple with in real-time. We spoke with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday for a wide-ranging interview about reporting on the war. I generally feel that we in the news media writ large, all over the world, censor too much. ‘Old Dads’: Bill Burr’s Bitter Comedy of Fatherhood
  + stars: | 2023-10-20 | by ( John Anderson | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Bokeem Woodbine, Bill Burr and Katie Aselton Photo: NETFLIXThe shtick of stand-up legend Bill Burr is the comedy of the oppressed—the oppressed in question being middle-aged males in a foreign land, i.e. the 2020s, where they can’t say what they want, smoke where they want, win an argument with a woman or lay claim to the victimhood that seems to give everyone else the upper hand. The Burr persona is angry, ironic and, quite often, hilarious. If you find him offensive, it might be because he’s making fun of you. And you might be him.

A GOP lawmaker said he was "disgusted" by US college responses to Hamas' attacks on Israel. AdvertisementAdvertisementA top Republican lawmaker overseeing US federal taxes has attacked the tax-exempt status of universities failing to condemn Hamas' "barbaric acts of terrorism committed against the Jewish people," according to a statement. Smith added that after Hamas' "horrific attack" on Israel on October 7, some universities, which had previously condemned speech they disapproved of, had failed to condemn Hamas attacks and student statements of support for Hamas. In the 12 days since the Palestinian militant group Hamas' terror attacks on Israel, elite US universities have been criticized for their response, or lack of response, to Hamas' attacks and student statements holding Israel responsible for Hamas' offensive. More than thirty Harvard student organizations issued a joint statement on October 10, in which they held Israel "entirely" responsible for Hamas' attacks.

Who is El Deif, alleged mastermind of the Hamas’ attack?

He’s now in charge of Hamas’ military wing, the Al Qassem Brigades. And on the ground, in private conversations, it’s been difficult to find people who are genuinely behind Hamas military campaigning. Men like El Deif, the bomb makers and decision takers, were hunted by Israel. Key to this change, too, was another major figure in Hamas’ military wing, Yahya Sinwar. Another Republican presidential candidate has dropped out of the crowded 2024 field. He said the need to rally around one candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump had become increasingly clear. The GOP front-runner remains hugely popular in the Republican Party, despite making history as the first president to be impeached twice and inciting the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021. The Florida governor officially launched his 2024 presidential campaign on May 24 in a glitch-marred Twitter announcement, casting himself as Trump’s only legitimate Republican rival. Opinion | Vivek Ramaswamy Is Confused
  + stars: | 2023-09-25 | by ( Carlos Lozada | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
The theatrically combative presidential candidacy of Vivek Ramaswamy seems to be premised on two messages. The other is his devotion to Donald Trump, whom Ramaswamy relentlessly defended in the debate, promising to support the former president, if Trump wins the Republican nomination, or to pardon him, if Ramaswamy wins the White House. In these works, Ramaswamy is more thoughtful, but also more confused, than his smiling, trolly, rapid-fire campaign persona. He can’t seem to decide if woke capitalism is a public-relations ploy or a mortal threat to the republic. Stakeholder capitalism is a “farce,” he writes, an example of “corporate opportunism” and “self-interest masquerading as morality,” a “do-good smoke screen” through which businesses distract the public from their perfidy.

It was billed as a modest proposal that would help heal the traumas of history and unite the country. Australia would change its Constitution to recognize the original inhabitants of the land and enshrine an advisory body in Parliament for Aboriginal people, giving them a greater say on issues that affect their lives. But over the past year, the proposal has exposed racial fault lines and become ensnared in a bitter culture war, in a country that has long struggled to reckon with its colonial legacy. And now, public polling suggests, a referendum on the matter — which will be held on Oct. 14 — is likely to fail. That result, according to Thomas Mayo, an Indigenous leader, would mean “Australia officially dismissing our very existence.”

In the Republican coalition, it is a moment that has culminated decades of change – and one that points to years of turbulence ahead. Overwhelming majorities of Republican voters dismiss the charges against Trump. In Gallup’s latest annual survey of trust in institutions, Republicans expressed less faith in 10 of the 16 measured. Veteran GOP pollster Whit Ayres points to another, more personal, reason so many GOP voters have discounted the charges against Trump. Trump is the Republican most effectively riding that wave now, but it seems unlikely to recede whenever he fades from the political scene.
